In Europe, people tend to walk a lot, which should help, but only up to a certain point. Physical activity is an important part of losing weight, but you can’t eat every pastry or croissant in sight and still expect to lose weight even if you walk a lot.

When it comes to weight loss while traveling, three things are crucial: portion control, being aware of what you eat, and keeping well.

For the first, try using a measuring cup and measuring spoons to gauge out what a cup, half a cup, one tablespoon etc. look like in a bowl and on a plate. That way, you have an idea of just how much you’re eating when you’re in Europe, so that you can enjoy trying the local specialties without packing on the pounds. A half-cup of gelato is a tasty treat that isn’t too bad, but bring that up to one or more cups and that’s nearly your daily calorie allotment. You shouldn’t have too much trouble with portion control, as Europeans tend to eat smaller portions than Americans, but that’s changing and so it’s better to be aware.
